CyberCrime & Doing Time: Facebook Safety & Million Member Facebook Groups.

So, remember that the next time you join a “million member group”, what you are really doing is helping these advertisers make it easier to spam you with their ads. While it may seem a great “social cause”, its not. Nobody cares if 1 million people join the group. Except the guy getting paid for it.

I try to stay away from the big groups, but on occasion I find one that I end up spending some time in. One recent one was does not fall into the “One Million” club but serves to remind me that not all we see on Facebook is legit. The group I ran across purported to include everyone who had done some specific activity in a certain place.

I admit it, I was there in the time frame mentioned. I went through each one of the users who had signed up. There were two people I recognized by name. It is not surprising to me that they were signed up at all. I knew them well just 25 years ago. Some things never change… <sigh>

Of all the others, none were any that I had known or run into at all.

There were lots of ads and links provided by various users. At this point I figured it was more about the ads and money than about actual content and people getting reacquainted.

Then I ran into the article at the top of this post.

The point is that ignorance is costly. For those who prey on others, it can be a great source of revenue.
